Sodium nitrate appears as a white crystalline solid. Noncombustible but accelerates the burning of combustible materials. If large quantities are involved in fire or the combustible material is finely divided an explosion may result. May explode under prolonged exposure to heat or fire. Toxic oxides of nitrogen are produced in fires. Used in solid propellants, explosives, fertilizers, and for many other uses.
Properties of sodium nitrate (CAS:7631-99-4):
1. This product is colorless or white with yellowish rhombus crystals.
2. Odorless, salty, slightly bitter, easy to deliquescence.
3. Relative density: 2.261.
4. Melting point: 306.8℃.
5. Boiling point: 380°C (decomposed into sodium nitrite).
6. Easily soluble in water (ice water 90%, hot water 160%), slightly soluble in ethanol and glycerol. 10% aqueous solution is neutral.

Sodium nitrate is a colorless, odorless, crystalline compound, sometimes referred to as soda niter, nitrate of soda or Chile saltpeter.
It is used for making potassium nitrate, fertilizers, explosives, in the production of high-strength glass, some limited pharmaceuticals and to preserve meats.
It can also be used as the raw material for the production of nitric acid, which is also important for fertilizers and explosives, as well as the etching of metals and for the purification and extraction of gold.
It is often confused with sodium nitrite, which, although chemically similar, has decidedly different properties and uses.
