Caustic Soda Sodium Hydroxide Used as Acid Neutralizers in the Food Industry
Sodium hydroxide, also known as caustic soda, caustic soda, caustic soda, and flake caustic soda, is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula NaOH and a relative molecular weight of 39.9970.
Pure sodium hydroxide is a white solid that is very soluble in water. Its aqueous solution has an astringent taste and a greasy feel. When sodium hydroxide is exposed to air, it easily absorbs moisture, and the surface becomes wet and gradually dissolves. This phenomenon is called deliquescence. Its relative density is 2.130. Melting point is 318.4℃. Boiling point is 1390℃. There are two types of commercially available caustic soda: solid and liquid. Pure solid caustic soda is white, in the form of blocks, flakes, rods, and granules, and is brittle; pure liquid caustic soda is a colorless, transparent liquid. Solid caustic soda has strong hygroscopicity. It is easily soluble in water, releases heat when dissolved, and its aqueous solution is alkaline and greasy; it is soluble in ethanol and glycerol. It is extremely corrosive and has a corrosive effect on fibers, skin, glass, ceramics, etc. It reacts with metal aluminum and zinc, non-metal boron and silicon to release hydrogen; it undergoes a disproportionate reaction with halogens such as chlorine, bromine, and iodine; it neutralizes with acids to produce salt and water.
