Sodium nitrite (NaNO₂) is an inorganic salt formed by the combination of nitrite ions and sodium ions. Sodium nitrite is easily deliquescent and soluble in water and liquid ammonia. Its aqueous solution is alkaline.
Sodium nitrite has a salty taste and is used to make fake table salt. Sodium nitrite reacts with oxygen to form sodium nitrate when exposed to air.

1. In metal surface treatment, sodium nitrite is used as a high-temperature oxidant for metal surface treatment, passivation technology, rust prevention and metal surface treatment technology.
2. In the printing and dyeing industry, sodium nitrite is used as diazo dye to bleach fabrics. Sodium nitrite is used in the bleaching process of fabrics to print clearer patterns on the fabrics and make the fabrics more durable and whiter.
3. NaNO2 is used to preserve food. Sodium nitrite is considered a food-safe chemical when used properly. The recommended dosage of NaNO2 as an additive and preservative for meat and fish is strictly controlled below 0.6%, as higher concentrations can cause poisoning in humans.
