Sodium bicarbonate is an inorganic compound, white powder or fine crystals, odorless, salty, easily soluble in water, slightly soluble in ethanol (some say insoluble), and the aqueous solution is slightly alkaline. It is easily decomposed by heat, and slowly decomposes in humid air to produce carbon dioxide. It starts to decompose at about 50°C and completely decomposes when heated to 270°C.
