What are the Uses of Adding Sodium Nitrite to Concrete?

The application of sodium nitrite in concrete is mainly as a concrete antifreeze agent and anti-chloride ion corrosion agent. Specifically, the role and application of sodium nitrite in concrete are as follows:

  • 1. Antifreeze:

In low temperatures in winter, the water in concrete will freeze, causing the volume of the concrete to expand, thus causing cracking and damage to the concrete. Sodium nitrite can be added to concrete as an antifreeze to prevent freeze-thaw damage to the concrete by inhibiting the freezing of water.
Sodium nitrite can react with water in concrete to produce nitrous acid, which can lower the freezing point of water and thus delay the freezing process of concrete.

  • 2. Chloride ion corrosion resistance agent:

Chloride ions in concrete are one of the main causes of concrete reinforcement corrosion. Sodium nitrite can be added to concrete as an anti-chloride ion corrosion agent to react with chloride ions to generate sodium chloride and nitrite, thereby reducing the intrusion of chloride ions into concrete and delaying the corrosion process of concrete reinforcement.
