India's ONGC Plans to Import Ethane on a Large Scale
On February 18, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation of India (ONGC) announced plans to provide ethane feedstock to its dual feedstock cracker (OPaL) at Dahj in the western Indian state of Gujarat, through large-scale imports of ethane.
The company said, “ONGC plans to procure 800,000 tons of ethane per annum from May 2028 to secure feedstock for OPaL.” ONGC has a 95% stake in OPaL, which produces 1.1 million tons of ethylene and 400,000 tons of propylene annually. The cracker uses naphtha and a mixture of ethane, propane and butane as feedstock.OPaL also owns a 340,000 mtpa polypropylene (PP) production unit, a 340,000 mtpa high-density polyethylene (HDPE) unit, and two linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE)/HDPE flexibles with a total capacity of 720,000 mtpa.
On the same day, ONGC issued a letter of intent to partner with companies operating and managing Very Large Ethane Carriers (VLECs), Very Large Gas Carriers and LNG carriers in the global market.ONGC plans to set up a joint venture company to raise funds and build the VLECs.ONGC will charter the VLECs from the joint venture company to transport ethane for its requirements.
