Phased Suspension of Production! Chemical Production at
Two Japanese Plants of Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation Will Be Terminated
On March 31, 2025, the Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation released a news release stating that the company has decided to cease production of products in phases by the end of March 2027 at the Onahama Plant of Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation and the Iwaki Plant of Shinrin Corporation, both located in Iwaki City, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan.
Background of the shutdown
The Konahama Plant of Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation began operations in September 1937 as Nippon Hydrogen Industry Corporation (later Nippon Kasei Corporation), while the Iwaki Plant of Shihayashi Corporation was established in October 2020 as a result of transferring and integrating a wide range of Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation's products and the operations of the former Konahama Distillation Plant into Shihayashi Corporation.
Both plants have been engaged in the production of a wide range of chemical products, and in recent years they have taken steps to streamline their operations and attract new business in response to drastic changes in the market environment. However, despite these efforts, securing the profitability of these plants has become extremely difficult.
The Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation is driving business portfolio transformation based on three business selection criteria (alignment with vision, competitive advantage, and growth potential) outlined in the New Medium-Term Management Plan 2029, which was announced in November 2024. Following a review of the Onahama Plant of Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation and the Iwaki Plant of Shinrin Corporation based on these criteria, the Mitsubishi Chemical Group decided to discontinue production at these two plants in phases.
