Why Not Calcium Chloride?

Calcium chloride is highly effective at absorbing moisture from the surrounding air and can release heat while doing so.

Calcium chloride, an inorganic compound with the chemical formula CaCl2, typically appears as a powder, white flakes, or granules and has good solubility in water. As a de-icing agent, calcium chloride maintains excellent performance even in extremely low temperatures down to minus 50 degrees Celsius.

Calcium chloride is widely used for de-icing and dust control on gravel roads, as well as in the food industry, either as a direct de-icing agent or in combination with other substances. In most parts of the world, calcium chloride is primarily obtained by extracting from limestone; it is a byproduct of the Solvay process. Additionally, calcium chloride can also be derived from the purification of brine.

Calcium chloride is not harmful to humans; however, according to the (GHS), it is H319, meaning it has the characteristic of causing serious eye irritation.

There are various concentrations of calcium chloride, with purity levels specified as ranging from 74-77% or 94-97%. The higher the concentration, the greater its absorption capacity. Therefore, de-icing agents containing 94-97% CaCl2 have stronger melting capabilities compared to those with 74-77% CaCl2.

Exceptionally gifted

Calcium chloride (CaCl2) possesses significant hygroscopic properties, effectively absorbing moisture from the air. As an efficient snow-melting agent, calcium chloride can lower the freezing point of water, rapidly melting snow and ice, and has a relatively small negative environmental impact. During use, it is essential to strictly control the amount applied and store it in a dry environment to prevent corrosion of metals. When combined with physical removal methods, its potential environmental impact can be further reduced.

De-icing and Snow Melting Efficiency

The efficiency of calcium chloride as a snow melter comes from its significant hygroscopic properties and its ability to lower the freezing point of water. When applied to snow or ice, calcium chloride can rapidly absorb moisture from the surrounding environment, even at very low temperatures.

Sustainable Choice

High efficiency snow melting: Compared to traditional de-icers such as salt (sodium chloride) and other snow melting agents, calcium chloride demonstrates higher efficiency, functioning at lower temperatures with an effective operating temperature as low as minus thirty degrees Celsius.

Rapid action: Thanks to its high heat of solution, calcium chloride can quickly release heat, thereby accelerating the melting process of snow and ice.

Relatively less environmental impact: When used appropriately, calcium chloride causes relatively less damage to vegetation and soil compared to other snow melting chemicals.
