P-methylphenol, chemical formula: C7H8O, molecular weight: 108.13, is a colorless liquid with special odor obtained by using toluene as raw material and sulfuric acid as sulfonating agent through sulfonation, neutralization, alkali melting, acidification and separation. Crystal, flammable, insoluble in water, soluble in ethanol,chloroform and hot water. P-cresol is weakly acidic and reacts with sodium hydroxide to form a soluble sodium salt, but does not react with sodium carbonate; p-cresol sodium salt reacts with alkylating agents; and Aldehydes react to obtain synthetic resin; catalyze hydrogenation to generate methyl cyclohexanol. P-methylphenol is easy to oxidize, and the color becomes darker when it comes in contact with light and air, forming quinones and other complex compounds.
