Sodium nitrite is white to light yellow granular crystal or powder, tasteless, easily deliquescent, toxic, slightly soluble in alcohol, and aqueous solution is alkaline, PH value of about 9. Relative density (water =1g/cm3) : 2.17g/cm3; Melting point: 271℃; Boiling point 320℃ (decomposition).
Sodium nitrite is a strong oxidant and reductive, will gradually oxidize in the air, the surface becomes sodium nitrate, can also be oxidized by the oxidant; Brown nitrogen dioxide gas is released when decomposed by weak acid. Sodium nitrite is used in the following areas:
