Sodium nitrite (NaNO₂) is an inorganic salt formed by the combination of nitrite ions and sodium ions. Pure sodium nitrite is a white to light yellow crystal. Sodium nitrite is deliquescent, easily soluble in water and liquid ammonia, and its aqueous solution is alkaline, slightly soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol, methanol. Sodium nitrite has a salty taste and is sometimes used to make fake table salt. In the air, sodium nitrite will be slowly oxidized to sodium nitrate (NaNO3). Sodium nitrite is easy to explode in contact with organic matter.

Sodium nitrite should be placed in low temperature, dry, ventilated warehouse. Doors and Windows are tight to prevent direct sunlight. Can be stored with other nitrates other than ammonium nitrate, but with organic matter, combustible, reducing agent isolation storage, and isolated fire source.
