Paraformaldehyde (alias: Polyoxymethylene, POM) is a polymer of formaldehyde (high molecular weight polyoxymethylene), with a general structure length of eight to one hundred units.
Paraformaldehyde is a white combustible crystalline powder with a formaldehyde odor. It dissolves slowly in cold water and dissolves faster in hot water. The solubility in water is 0.24g/100cm3H2O at 20℃. Insoluble in ethanol. Soluble in caustic soda and potassium solutions.
Paraformaldehyde is mainly used in the production and use of herbicides, and is also used in the preparation of synthetic resins (such as artificial horn products or artificial ivory) and adhesives. At the same time, it is used in the pharmaceutical industry (the active ingredient of contraceptive cream) and the disinfection of pharmacies, clothes and bedding, etc. Paraformaldehyde can also be used as fumigant disinfectant, bactericide and insecticide.
