Sodium hypochlorite is a white powder and the color of the liquid of it is a colorless or yellowish. Melting point is 18℃. It is extremely unstable in the air and decomposes to produce carbon dioxide. It decomposes rapidly after heat and is more stable in the alkaline state. Sodium hypochlorite soluble in water, dissolved in water into caustic soda and hypochlorous acid, lOOmL HzO at 0℃ dissolved 29.3g sodium prochlorate. Hypochlorous acid is redecomposed into hydrogen chloride and new oxygen, which has a strong oxidation capacity, so sodium hypochlorite is also a strong oxidizing agent. Its stability is affected by light, heat, heavy metal cation and PH value. It has a pungent odor.
There are many methods for the preparation of sodium hypochlorite, and the commonly used method in industry is the liquid alkali chlorination process. A certain amount of liquid alkali is added to an appropriate amount of water to form a sodium hydroxide solution below 30%, and chlorine gas is injected into the reaction below 35℃. When the sodium hypochlorite content in the reaction solution reaches a certain concentration, sodium hypochlorite products are obtained.
Sodium hypochlorite is an oxidizing bactericide whose bactericidal mechanism is similar to that of liquid chlorine. Sodium hypochlorite solution is generally used in industrial circulating water. At the same time, sodium hypochlorite increased the PH value of circulating water. Therefore, in the circulating water system with liquid chlorine as a fungicide, the residual chlorine is difficult to reach the target, in the case of serious PH decline, the impact of a larger dose of sodium hypochlorite can ensure the residual chlorine and pH indicators.
It is highly oxidizing and corrosive. Skin contact can cause burns. Entry into the body can cause mucosal corrosion, perforation of the esophagus or trachea, and edema of the throat. Inhalation into the lungs can cause severe bronchial burns and edema in the lungs. Workers in contact with and use should take good precautions to prevent ammonium hypochlorite solution from entering the human body and skin.
